Sunday 18 September | The Derbyshire Youth Folk Ensemble (DYFE) is running a free workshop for young musicians of any instrument

The Derbyshire Youth Folk Ensemble (DYFE) is a group of young musicians interested in playing traditional English folk and dance music who meet several times a year for workshop days and performances.

We are inviting musicians on any instrument to come and experience one of our FREE workshop days – a full day of exciting folk music activities and tuition led by Sarah Matthews, Benjamin Swift and Jo May.

What to expect

This workshop day is perfect for anyone of a grade 3+ ability on their instrument. We have tailored activities and tuition to all ability levels including:

  • Learning and playing by ear
    Explore techniques to improve your skills at playing from ear without relying on reading music
  • Exploring rhythms and pulse
    Pulse and rhyhtm are the heart of all folk music. We'll explore these musical concepts together to create music that dances with energy
  • Harmonising, arranging, riffs and part playing
    it's not all about the tune! We'll listen to and discuss how to improve skills as harmonising and using riffs in our playing
