The orchestra usually meets twice a year for residential courses in February and July. The orchestra prepares music in rehearsals with accomplished instrumentalists tutoring for the duration of the courses, and with time for recreation and socialising with like-minded musicians from across the city and county. Each course culminates in a high-profile performance at venues across Derbyshire.

Many of the players in DDSO will go on to audition and gain a place in the City & County Youth Orchestra.

In recent years the orchestra has been directed by accomplished Venezuelan conductors Natalia Luis Bassa and Veronica Urrego. The Orchestra has recently performed works such as Copland− Buckaroo Holidayfrom Rodeo, Strauss− Radetzky March, Walton− Crown Imperial and Beethoven− Symphony no.5, final movement. The orchestra regularly works on creative projects with Sinfonia Viva.
