Brass audition requirements for CCYO and CCYWB

Requirements for brass players auditioning for the City & County Youth Orchestra (CCYO) and Wind Band (CCYWB).

During an audition you will be expected to meet the following requirements:

Audition Piece

Perform once piece/studies which present a coherent mixture of periods, style, mood and tempo. The pieces/studies should demonstrate a mastery of the complete range of your instrument, clear and accurate articulation, a variety of dynamics and a high standard of musicianship.

The pieces/studies should be of at least Grade 6 standard and the maximum total playing time should not exceed 6 minutes. Please bring a photocopy of your music or the piano accompaniment for the use of the audition staff. This will be returned to you at the end of the audition.

Please note that pieces will be performed without piano accompaniment.

Scales & Arpeggios

Play some scales and arpeggios which will be selected from the list below.

Horn | F# major, A major and G minor - 2 octaves | chromatic on F - 2 octaves

Trumpet/Cornet | Bb major and A major - 2 octaves | C minor - 12th | chromatic on G - 2 octaves

Euphonium (treble) | Bb major and G# minor - 2 octaves | chromatic on G - 3 octaves

Euphonium (bass) | Ab major, E major and F# minor - 2 octaves | chromatic on G - 3 octaves

Trombone (treble) | Bb major and G# minor - 2 octaves | chromatic on G - 3 octaves

Trombone (bass) | Ab major, E major and F# minor - 2 octaves | chromatic on G - 3 octaves

Tuba | C major, A major and B minor - 2 octaves | chromatic on A - 3 octaves

Sight reading

Play a prepared sight reading test of grade 5/6 standard.
