The City & County Youth Wind Band are combining forces with the Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra for a rare performance of a suite of music from the film score to The Battle of Stalingrad, composed by Aram Khachaturian.
The film depicts the savage scenes from the World War II Battle of Stalingrad (now named Volgograd) − where Nazi forces attempted and failed to capture the city named after the Soviet ruler, Jospeh Stalin, over the prolonged and brutal winter of 1942/43, destroying the entire city. The score is no less massive in scale and immensity, and requires such large forces that the players of the City & County Youth Wind Band have been recruited by the Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra to provide the force of sound required to give this performance justice.
The Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra will also perform a programme of Russian Masterpieces with Alexandra Dariescu as piano soloist.

Entrance into the City & County Youth Wind Band (CCYWB) is done by audition, where applicants are expected to be of at least grade 6. Competition for places is quite high, and we expect many players who are given a place in this ensemble to be up to, and beyond grade 8 standard.
