Live Orchestra Concerts with the BBC Symphony Orchestra

The BBC Symphony Orchestra will perform free Ten Pieces concerts specially for students in Key Stage 2 at the new Derby Arena − Hosted by CBBC's Dick & Dom.

Ten Pieces is an exciting and ambitious new initiative for primary schools, led by BBC Learning and the BBC Performing Groups. The project aims to introduce a generation of children to classical music, and inspire them to use the music as a stimulus for their own creativity. Ten Pieces Concerts in Derby

Free tickets for KS2

The first major cultural event at the new Derby Arena, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and members of the BBC Singers will perform all ten pieces in two concerts:

  • Morning performance: 10.30 - 12.00 −This concert is now fully booked.
  • Afternoon performance: 13.30 - 15.00 − This concert is now fully booked.

The repertoire was chosen by the BBC specifically to engage and introduce younger listeners to the exciting world of orchestral music and will be accompanied by screen footage of some of the responses to the music from young people around the UK.

KS2 Students and staff from primary schools in Derby and Derbyshire are invited to these performances, which are produced by the BBC Symphony Orchestra in partnership with Orchestras Live and the Derby & Derbyshire Music Partnership.

Mozart Concert in E-flat major for Horn and Orchestra, third movement

John Adams Short Ride in a Fast Machine
Stravinsky The Firebird

Participatory moments

Anna Meredith Connect it − all schools attending the concert will be able to join in with part of this piece alongside BBC musicians
Handel Zadok the Priest − the school audiences will join in with this piece accompanied by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and members of the BBC Singers.

To help prepare for these participatory moments, a member of the Derby & Derbyshire Music Partnership teaching team will arrange to visit your school and teach your pupils what is required of them, free of charge.

How will schools benefit from Ten Pieces?

  • School groups will experience an event that celebrates the excitement and power of live orchestral music and gives students and teachers direct access to world class music-making, challenging pre-conceptions about the role of the orchestra and the scope and breadth of its repertoire.
  • There is a vast array of online resources with study resources and material for classroom music-making.

Costs, booking and other details

  • Tickets: Tickets to these concerts are FREE, however schools are responsible for arranging their own transport for children and staff.
  • Staffing: Derby & Derbyshire Music Partnership staff will be stewarding the event but responsibility for the supervision of pupils remains with the school who should arrange for a suitable number of staff to accompany children. 
  • Photograph policy: Photographs may be taken by approved BBC personnel. As the event organiser, the BBC reserves the right to use these images for promotional purposes. By accepting seats at this free event, you are granting the BBC permission to do so. Please ensure parents are aware of this in accordance with your school guidelines. No unauthorised photographs or recordings are permitted in the hall.
  • Booking: Both concerts are now fully booked − bookings are no longer being taken.
