Sit back and relax to these moments of musical history, in one of Derby's most historically significant and powerful spaces. Featuring some of the biggest names in the classical canon including the undeniable Mozart, Haydn and Dvorak, Sinfonia Viva will sweep through movements of indulgent poise and power.

Haydn's Symphony No. 22 is a hugely popular and appropriately given the piece's name, much debated piece. The name ("the Philosopher") is not on the original manuscript and is unlikely to come from Haydn himself, however "Le Philosoph" does appear on a manuscript copy of the symphony that was found in Modena dated 1790. As such the nickname itself dates from the composer's own lifetime.

Mozart composed his Violin Concerto in A major in 1775, completing it on December 20 that year in Salzburg. Due to a lack of information it is hard to pinpoint the exact date of its first performance. Mozart was not just a classical master of composing music, but also playing it. He was a virtuoso piano player and violinist and is believed to have composed his concertos principally for his own use, but they were deemed so excellent that other musicians soon mastered them as well.

Dvorak's Serenade for Strings is instantly recognisable. Composed in just two weeks in May 1875, this piece remains one of the composers most popular and well known pieces.
