Classroom Instrumental Learning: Information for Schools

The following guidance and resources outline the key arrangements for Classroom Instrumental Learning, providing schools with the information needed to manage provision effectively.

Navigate

Agreements

All schools are sent a copy of their completed agreements by email to the person/people specified at the time of booking and arranging the programme. If you would like another copy, please get in touch with us and we can send it again.

Skills, Knowledge and Understanding: progression documents for schools

Skills progression documents outline what skills, knowledge and understanding is covered in our CIL programmes, with key information on what is being covered from the music model curriculum to inform your own school music curriculum planning.

  • How do we get these documents? Deliverers are asked to send these documents to the Music Coordinator, but if you need to request them, please find the Deliverer's contact details in your programme agreement, or get in touch with us to request contact details if you need to.

Payment arrangements for CIL staff

For full information about payments, including rates of pay, claiming procedures and how to set up a Deliverer on payroll, follow the link below.

Payment information for Deliverers

Some of our programmes have a Music Support Practitioner or a Trainee Deliverer. These are paid by Derby & Derbyshire Music Partnership directly.

Discounted programmes

If your programme was eligible for a morning discount or small school subsidy, Derby & Derbyshire Music Partnership will pay schools directly the amount in the Autumn term so that you can pay the Deliverer the full fee for the programme.

Insurance for instruments provided by DDMP

Schools will need to ensure the instruments that are provided by DDMP for CIL programmes are appropriately insured at all times against damage and loss. This can

Instruments in school

  • Strings, Woodwind and Brass: If your school insurance policy doesn't include the specialist repair or replacement of damaged or lost instruments, you may need to take out an additional policy to cover this (see below).
  • Percussion: A standard insurance policy should cover these instruments as it's likely that damaged instrument will need replacing rather than requiring specialist repair. This should be checked by schools with their insurers.
  • Ukulele: The replacement value of a ukulele is not high enough to make it cost-effective to insure them. Schools can either opt to get insurance for them, or choose to pay us the cost of a replacement instrument if this is ever required.

Sending instruments home with pupils

Pupils often benefit from taking instruments home to practise, and many schools choose to allow this. It’s important to be aware, though, that schools remain responsible for repair or replacement if an instrument is damaged or lost.

  • Check with your deliverer: For some programmes it is not necessary for instruments to go home with pupils (e.g. percussion), and there may be other factors why this isn't appropriate for your setting.
  • Check your insurance: We recommend checking any insurance policies you have to see if instruments are covered if being taken off-site. If not, Musicians Insurance Services offer policies that cover this (see below).
  • Agreements for parents: You may wish to put agreements in place with parents so they take responsibility for the instrument and any associated costs. We have prepared a template that schools can use, or copy as a format – talk to your deliverer about helping with the specific details.

Valuations for instruments

Valuations and replacement costs of instruments can be found on our insurance page (also see below).

Obtaining insurance

DDMP doesn't provide insurance for schools, however, we recommend Musicians Insurance Services (based in Clay Cross, Derbyshire) if an additional policy is needed. Find out more about getting insurance for instruments.

What to do with damaged or lost instruments

It is inevitable from time to time that an instrument will be damaged and will need fixing or replacing. Please follow this guide to handling instrument repairing or replacement.

  • Ascertain the extent of the damage: Ask your programme deliverer to do a preliminary assessment of the instrument to determine whether it needs repairing or replacing. We suggest taking a photo when you find out about damage.

Repairing or replacing instruments

  • Inform us: Your programme Deliverer will inform us in the first instance so we can make an assessment whether we can fix the instrument, or need the school to claim on their insurance. We can also order a temporary replacement through the usual instrument request procedure.
  • Contact your insurers
If necessary, find out what the procedure is for making a claim for repair costs. Your insurance provider may dictate where the instrument can go, but if not, ask your Deliverer for advice on local repairers to organise a repair with.
  • Monetary claims: If the instrument is not repairable, please do not purchase a replacement instrument yourself – we will order one on your behalf so we can ensure it matches the same quality as the others in the set.
  • Make payment: DDMP will arrange with you to make the payment for the replacement instrument.
