Step inside the magnificent Crooked Spire and experience the thrill of playing one of the most awe-inspiring instruments in the world – the church organ! Often called the King of Instruments, the organ produces a rich and powerful sound that fills grand spaces with breathtaking music.
It's an instrument that many rarely get the chance to explore, until now!
Join us for an unforgettable afternoon of hands-on music-making!
Under the expert guidance of Peter Shepherd (Organist and Choir Master at the Crooked Spire) and Jonathan Francis (Artistic Director at Chesterfield Studios), participants will:
- Discover the magic – Learn how this incredible instrument works, from playing on multiple rows of keys (known as 'manuals') to using your feet on the pedals and creating unique sounds with 'stops.'
- Be inspired – Watch and listen as Peter Shepherd showcases the majestic sounds of the Crooked Spire organ with a special performance.
- Perform – Bring along a piece you know well and learn how to adapt it for the organ with expert tips, guidance, and plenty of practice throughout the day.

This opportunity is for piano and keyboard players from 8-18. Grades are not necessary, but players should either be able to prove they are currently having lessons or have stopped lessons after reaching an advanced standard.
Players must be able to bring a piece of music they can confidently play, and we suggest this is from the Baroque or Classical periods (~1600-1800) as this will be more suitable for the organ. If you are using an ABRSM exam piece, this would be one of the A pieces.
There is a limit of only 10 places for this event. Please sign up using the link below before the end of Wednesday 12 February telling us a little about your playing, and someone will be in touch a few days after if selected to attend. We encourage players of a range of abilities to sign up, and ability will not be the only factor in deciding who is selected.
