Subject professional development materials

Music in schools - promoting good practice" (September 2012)

Ofsted publishes a number of subject surveys every year. They look at developments in a specific subject over the previous three years, based on specialist inspectors' visits to a range of schools.

In March 2012, Ofsted published Music in schools: wider still and wider 2008−2011. It highlights the importance of giving sufficient, regular time for developing aural awareness and musical understanding. This is to ensure that schools prioritise giving pupils opportunities for practical, creative application and response to music.

These professional development materials have been put together to help music teachers, headteachers, and music hub leaders. This is to build their shared understanding about the important features of good teaching and learning by reflecting on the main messages from the music report.
