CNEDMC provides affordable, accessible musical experiences for children and young people. With diverse ensembles, bursaries, and welcoming support, we’re building a thriving space for all to explore their musical potential.

CNEDMC is based at Brookfield Community School in Chesterfield (map), with most of its groups happening there on Saturday morning. Take a look at the groups below for more information.

Our groups and ensembles

Any musical ability is welcomed at Chesterfield & North East Derbyshire Music Centre, with groups for total beginners up to an advanced standard.

For string players

  • String Orchestra – Saturday mornings
    An ensemble for string players up to grade 3 standard, nurturing early development in ensemble music-making through engaging repertoire in a supportive environment.
  • Chamber Orchestra – Saturday morning
    A more advanced ensemble for string players grade 4+ standards, providing a rich environment to enhance string techniques through full ensemble playing.
  • Folk Group – Saturday mornings
    Our folk group learns by ear, enhancing listening skills and creative musicianship. Open to all instruments and voices, it provides a flexible, supportive space for growth.

For woodwind, brass and percussion players

  • Concert Band – Saturday mornings
    Concert Band is where most CNEDMC wind players begin! Open to players who can play a few notes to approx. grade 3 standard, it offers a fun environment to enjoy playing together, make friends, and gain ensemble experience.
  • Festival Band – Saturday mornings
    Our largest senior ensemble for woodwind, brass, and percussion players from grade 4 to 8+. It offers a diverse repertoire, including original works and arrangements of film and pop music.
  • Folk Group – Saturday mornings
    Our folk group learns by ear, enhancing listening skills and creative musicianship. Open to all instruments and voices, it provides a flexible, supportive space for growth.
  • Clarinet Choir – Saturday mornings
    For advanced players (grades 4-8+) to deepen their musical skills. Led by a specialist, it explores diverse repertoire and various clarinet sizes, enhancing sound and collaboration.
  • Flute Choir – Saturday mornings
    For advanced players (grades 4 to 8+) to tackle challenging repertoire in a small ensemble. Guided by a specialist, members explore the flute family and enhance their skills.
  • Brass Fusion – Saturday mornings
    A dynamic ensemble for brass players from grade 4 to 8+. Blending brass with drums, keyboards, bass, and vocals, it explores genres like Funk, Jazz, Blues, and more.

For guitar players

  • Guitar and Ukuleles – Friday evenings (at St. Thomas Centre, Chatsworth Road)
    A welcoming space for young players to build skills. Suitable for beginners, it covers various genres, allowing members to learn at their own pace while connecting with others.
